Walking Shadow aka Bubble  (2020)

Site-specific live simulation software, projector, computer

Walking Shadow is a live simulation commissioned by the Dadaepo X Festival. It was projected onto a hilltop nursery in Busan for the whole Dadaepo neighbourhood to see. I was inspired by childrens’ physical development and how they learn to control their bodies. It made me question how much control I have over my own body, how much movement is unconscious, and how much movement is forced upon me.

At the time I wrote “The pandemic has left me wondering if my body is actually me, actually mine. Or is it just something I share for a while? I can drum its fingers. I can make it jog. I can make it sing in the shower. But is it me who makes its heart beat? Is it me who turns its world into vision? Is it me who hurts when it falls?”

The organisers of the Dadaepo X festival were inspired by Deptford X, an arts festival based in SE London that I served as an artist-trustee for 4 years. To recognise this relationship, Dadaepo X asked me, as a representative of Deptford X, to make a work for their inaugural festival. Dadaepo X took place from October 24th to November 1st, 2020.
