Chicken Scratch (2021)

Chicken Scratch is a digital installation made for Deptford Eggs, a joint exhibition of David Surman and Ian Gouldstone. It took place at ACAVA Studios within Paynes & Borthwick, a luxury housing development in Deptford sold on its prestigious history as a paper wharf. Deptford Eggs, presented as part of the Deptford X Festival Fringe in 2021, highlights a little-known chapter of the site's history as an egg-processing facility throughout the latter half of the 20th Century.
Breaking from Gouldstone's practice of live computer simulation, Chicken Scratch presents a gestural drawing, scrolling across a fragmented tower of bright LED panels.
